“It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it.
And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.”
Another exciting year is planned for Social Studies classes at Scales Mound High School.
I have served as a Civics Mentor through the McCormick Foundation for the teachers in ROE #8. I worked with teachers to implement the new Civics law which requires every high school students to take a Civics class and mastering state standards. I attended teacher workshops as a participant and a presenter to prepare me to be a resource for regional teachers.
I have also added to certifications to my resume. I became a Field Ambassador through The Field Museum in Chicago. As an ambassador, I am able to help teachers plan field trips to the museum and provide assistance obtaining resources available through the museum. My action research project focused on the use of the Japan Art Mile program, International Intercultural Mural Exchange, in my 8th grade Social Studies curriculum.

Another professional development activity I recently completed was to obtain my National Geographic Educator Certification. Becoming a Nat Geo Educator provides me with resources, professional development, and participation in a learning community with educators from around the world. Using National Geographic teaching materials provides innovative and interdisciplinary teaching strategies to inspire my students to think globally.
To obtain Nat Geo Educator Certification I completed learning modules, implemented National Geographic lessons and materials in my teaching, and create a video about my teaching and what I learned from the program. You can watch my video submission by clicking the link:

The “Classes” tab lists my daily class schedule and information about course offerings in the Social Studies Department at SMHS. “About Me” will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the life and times of Mrs. Kelly. OK maybe not everything, but you will learn a little more about me. “My Web Pages” section shares my many travel adventures, projects I have completed and my on line photo album. On the “Student Projects” page you will find samples of student work, from videos to pictures of projects.
Occasionally I update my blog to share classroom activities, show case student projects and help us all become “global citizens”. Unfortunately, I do not get time to “blog” as much as I would like to. The days get busy and blogging is sometimes the last project I get to. You can find student work on the tab at the top of the page.
I hope you find my web page helpful and informative.
